Universiti Malaya Establishes Foundation and Branch Campus in Peking University, China

Universiti Malaya (UM) is expanding its international footprint through new partnerships in China. Vice Chancellor Professor Dato’ Seri Ir. Dr. Noor Azuan Abu Osman recently visited China, where he met with educational leaders and government officials, including China’s Deputy Minister of Education, H.E. Wu Yan. This meeting reaffirmed existing educational ties and explored opportunities for collaborative research, knowledge sharing, and technological innovation between Malaysia and China.
Academic Collaborations with Peking University
A significant outcome of the visit was a discussion with Peking University’s President, Professor Gong Qihuang, regarding potential academic collaborations, including the establishment of a Foundation Programme at Peking University. This initiative aims to enhance UM’s reputation within the global higher education landscape and strengthen its role in China.
Establishing a Branch Campus
The Vice Chancellor also engaged with Vice Governors of Shandong and Hubei provinces, H.E. Zhang Haibo and H.E. Shao Xinyu, to discuss the possibility of establishing a UM branch campus in one of these regions. This campus would aim to leverage the economic and technological strengths of the provinces, facilitating the introduction of Malaysian educational standards while preparing graduates to be globally competent.
Strengthening Cultural Ties and Fostering Innovation
The potential branch campus is viewed not only as an expansion of academic facilities but also as a means to strengthen cultural ties and foster innovation. These initiatives, supported by the Chinese Ministry of Education, reflect Malaysia’s commitment to enhancing educational standards and growing international partnerships.
Integration of Technology in Admission Processes
Additionally, discussions with Mr. Wang Daquan, Director General of the Chinese Service Centre for Scholarly Exchange (CSCSE), focused on the incorporation of digital technology and artificial intelligence to improve student admission processes. The proposed CSCSE-UM Centre aims to streamline admissions for prospective Chinese students wishing to study in Malaysia, thereby enhancing the quality of student selection.
Proactive Approach to International Education
These initiatives highlight UM’s proactive approach to utilizing technology to enhance the international student experience. By integrating AI and digital tools into its recruitment and academic processes, UM seeks to set new standards in higher education.
Commitment to Global Advancement
Overall, these efforts signify UM’s commitment to advancing academic, technological, and socio-economic progress on a global scale. The university’s engagement in China is focused not only on establishing physical campuses but also on creating a more interconnected and knowledgeable future.
