University of Birmingham Delegation Explores Cooperative Educational Opportunities with HUST’s School of Foreign Languages
A delegation from the University of Birmingham (UoB) visited the School of Foreign Languages at Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) on March 18, 2025, to explore educational collaboration opportunities. Attendees included Jiang Jing, Deputy Director of HUST’s Office of International Affairs, and Wang Xiaoyue, Chair of the University Committee for the School of Foreign Languages.
Welcoming Remarks and Overview
Wang Xiaoyue welcomed the delegation and provided an overview of the School’s achievements in faculty development, talent cultivation, and academic discipline enhancement. She noted the alignment of educational philosophies and strengths between UoB and HUST, highlighting the potential for future partnership. Wang emphasized the value of ongoing collaboration in faculty exchanges, joint curriculum development, and talent training, aimed at establishing a robust international platform for developing skilled professionals.

Professor Hayley Maxwell, Director of Academic English at UoB, expressed appreciation for the reception at HUST and acknowledged the longstanding partnership between the institutions across multiple disciplines. She pointed to the compatibility of the language teaching capabilities of HUST’s School of Foreign Languages with UoB’s Academic English program and indicated a desire for enhanced collaboration to bolster student proficiency in academic English and global competencies.
Symposium Discussions
During the symposium, participants engaged in extensive discussions regarding the creation of an academic English curriculum and the establishment of an English teaching center. They agreed on establishing a regular communication structure to support collaborative initiatives.
Event Highlights
The event was held in the “Yiyuan” Simultaneous Interpretation Room, where a team of graduate students from the English Interpretation program, under the guidance of Associate Professor Ding Xun, provided interpretation services, receiving commendations from the visiting delegation.

This engagement further strengthens the partnership between UoB and HUST’s School of Foreign Languages, expanding the School’s international cooperation network and enhancing its global presence.
