Korea University 2025 Entrance Ceremony: Celebrating New Beginnings and the KU Spirit

Korea University recently conducted its entrance ceremony for the Class of 2025 at the KU Hwajeong Gymnasium, colloquially known as the Tiger Dome, on February 28. The event was attended by approximately 7,000 people, including new students and their parents.

President’s Address

During the ceremony, President Kim Dong-One addressed attendees, emphasizing the importance of the college experience and the value of facing challenges without fear of failure. He encouraged students to view their university years as opportunities for personal growth and independence.

The “KU Spirit”

President Kim elaborated on the “KU Spirit,” which represents altruism, unity, and camaraderie among students at the university. He urged the audience to engage with literature, noting that books encapsulate the wisdom and experiences of previous generations that can offer valuable insights during challenging times.

Key Messages to Students

In his speech, President Kim conveyed three essential messages to the students:

  1. Think Big and Aim High. He encouraged students to pursue not only their personal aspirations but also to make positive contributions to society.
  2. Read Books. President Kim highlighted the role of reading in enhancing wisdom and decision-making skills, stating that each new student would receive a book authored by Inchon Kim Seong-su, the founder of Korea University, as recommended reading.
  3. Embrace Challenges Without Fear of Failure. He discussed the importance of exploring and learning from experiences during college, asserting that mistakes are a natural part of the learning process.

Milestone Celebration

The year 2025 also marks a significant milestone for Korea University, as it celebrates its 120th anniversary. President Kim expressed hope that current students would carry forward the values embodied in the KU Spirit throughout their pursuits.

Alumni Association’s Support

Seung Myung-ho, President of the KU Alumni Association, also addressed the incoming students, reminiscing about his own entrance nearly 50 years ago. He underscored the significance of the KU community and pledged the association’s support for students during their academic endeavors, encouraging them to embrace challenges while upholding values of freedom, justice, and truth.

Ceremony Conclusion

The ceremony concluded with the Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs presenting badges to the new students, followed by a group rendition of the school song. Performances by the KU Central Club Wind Ensemble, Choir, and Nongak Band provided a warm welcome, complemented by a spirited cheer from the KU cheering squad.

Student Enthusiasm

New student Song Hee-jae, who is majoring in Mathematics Education, expressed her enthusiasm about joining the university and receiving a scholarship, noting the connections she has already established with her classmates.
