UNAIR Students Develop Eco-Conscious App and Win First Place in National LKTIA

A team of students from Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) recently achieved first place in the Lomba Karya Tulis Al-Qur’an (LKTIA) Ramadan di Kampus (RDK) 2025, a national competition hosted by Universitas Gadjah Mada. The event took place on March 21, 2025, and centered on Quranic teachings that relate to prosperity and collective well-being in addressing various social and environmental issues. The UNAIR team received recognition for their application, Rootin’, which incorporates Islamic ecological principles within a digital format.
Team Composition
The team consisted of students from multiple faculties, including the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP), the Faculty of Science and Technology (FST), and the Faculty of Humanities (FIB). Notable members included Qonita Salma, Eka Novia Ai’zatul Ulya, and Riska Yuliana Putri, who collaborated on the project aimed at promoting sustainability and ecological awareness.
Inspiration and Features of Rootin’
Team leader Salma indicated that Rootin’ drew inspiration from Quranic principles concerning environmental stewardship, specifically referencing the verse Al-An’am 99 as interpreted by Ziauddin Sardar. The application offers various features, including the option to donate vegetation, plant identification tools, environmental activism campaigns, and educational materials.
Challenges and Learning Experience
During the competition, the team faced challenges, particularly in presenting their project to a panel of judges with expertise in Quranic literary interpretation. This experience highlighted the value of feedback, which contributed to the ongoing enhancement of their project. The selection process for the competition was extensive, involving a three-month preparatory phase, followed by a one-week window to finalize their research paper for submission.
Message of Inspiration
The team expressed the hope that their success would inspire other students to remain dedicated to their goals, emphasizing that achievement is achieved through determination and perseverance.
