NUS Students Champion Sustainable Living in Hostels: Green Initiatives and Practices

Sustainability has taken a central role in the experience at the National University of Singapore (NUS), particularly within its hostel community. Various eco-friendly initiatives have been integrated into hostel life, encouraging students to adopt sustainable practices in their living environments.

Eusoff Hall’s Green Committee

Eusoff Hall has established a Green Committee comprised of students committed to promoting environmentally responsible habits among peers. This academic year, the Committee is co-chaired by Justin Soon and Vienna Fiorella Anong, both second-year undergraduates from the School of Computing and the Faculty of Science, respectively. The Committee organizes activities aimed at fostering eco-conscious living, such as a recycling competition designed to engage residents in sustainable practices by rewarding effective recycling efforts.

As part of this recycling initiative, each block within Eusoff Hall is equipped with designated recycling boxes, which are assessed for proper sorting and cleanliness at the conclusion of each competition cycle. Additionally, the Committee has introduced a spice garden that features a variety of plants to encourage interest in gardening and environmental stewardship among residents.

Sheares Hall Initiatives

Sheares Hall, one of the oldest halls at NUS, also prioritizes environmental sustainability through its initiatives. The student committee, known as ConSheares, leads a range of programs that engage residents in community service and educational initiatives concerning environmental issues. A notable program, the Adopt a Plant initiative, pairs junior and senior students to care for various plant species, thereby fostering community ties and enhancing awareness of the ecological significance of gardening.

Prince George’s Park Residences Efforts

Prince George’s Park Residences has implemented a unique approach to waste reduction among its diverse student populace. In collaboration with the UTown Residences’ Sustainability Committee, the InfiniUse initiative was developed to facilitate the redistribution of unwanted items from departing residents to incoming students. This project is managed by a team of final-year undergraduates and aims to cultivate a culture of reuse within the NUS community.

Collective Commitment to Sustainability

Collectively, these sustainability initiatives reflect a commitment among NUS students to positively impact environmental preservation and community engagement, demonstrating how collaborative efforts can lead to meaningful change in promoting sustainability on campus.
