UI University Assists SDN 01 Depok Students in Understanding Cultural Heritage through Participatory Learning
On November 29, 2024, the University of Indonesia (UI) organized an educational session for students at SDN 01 Depok, focusing on the significance of cultural heritage and conservation efforts in the Old Depok area. The event, held on November 23, attracted over 100 participants and aimed to raise awareness about the importance of preserving historical sites as a part of the community’s collective identity.
Highlighting Historical Importance
Dian Sulistyowati, M.Hum., head of the outreach team and a lecturer in the Archaeology program at the Faculty of Cultural Sciences (FIB) at UI, highlighted the historical importance of the Old Depok area. Several colonial-era heritage sites, including the GPIB Immanuel Church, the former SDN Pancoran Mas 2 school, and Harapan Hospital, were emphasized as significant cultural landmarks. Continuous conservation efforts are considered essential for protecting both the physical and intangible aspects of these heritage sites.
Understanding Cultural Heritage
Dian noted, “The preservation of cultural heritage serves to safeguard physical structures as well as their archaeological, historical, architectural, and cultural values. Understanding these historical narratives is essential for recognizing the roots of the local community, which contributes to their identity. Therefore, it is important to instill the value of cultural heritage in the surrounding community, particularly within educational environments.”
Educational Initiatives and Engagement
The educational initiatives included the participation of Dian and ten archaeology students, who engaged the SDN 01 students through videos and interactive games. This was supplemented by a walking tour that allowed the students and their teachers to observe nearby heritage sites. The program was designed for elementary school students, viewed as future custodians of the nation and tasked with the responsibility of preserving cultural heritage.
Student Feedback
Fifth-grade student Raffasya expressed appreciation for the educational activity, stating that he learned to distinguish between colonial and modern structures. “Initially, I had no idea that there were buildings constructed during the Dutch colonial era. After the explanations provided by the UI team, I learned that SDN Pancoran Mas Dua is the first school established in Depok. I hope activities like this can be held more frequently, as they enhance our knowledge,” he commented.
Principal’s Commendation
The principal of SDN 01 Depok, Arwin, S.S., M.M., commended the outreach program implemented by the UI team. “The efforts by the UI team align with our hopes for the students to recognize and maintain the cultural heritage surrounding them. Through this education, we aspire to foster the students’ awareness and concern for cultural heritage, enabling them to participate in its preservation in the future,” said Arwin.
Broader Outreach Initiatives
The outreach initiative by the Faculty of Cultural Sciences at UI is part of broader efforts to engage younger generations in understanding and taking responsibility for their cultural heritage.
