On November 21, 2024, Dr. John Luk Wang Kwong, an 80-year-old retired engineer from Hong Kong, received a PhD from Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), emphasizing the value of perseverance and lifelong education.

Academic Journey

Dr. Luk, a former president of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers, completed his doctoral thesis titled “Innovation in Social Sustainability” through a distance learning program at USM. He began this academic journey in 2017, motivated by the desire to contribute to discussions on critical housing issues and urban development in Hong Kong.

Overcoming Challenges

During his studies, Dr. Luk faced several challenges, including limited resources and support due to the distance learning format. He credited his success to his determination and the consistent encouragement of his wife, Dr. Cheung Kit Ying, who is 75 years old.

Goals Beyond Career Advancement

Although Dr. Luk had a distinguished career in engineering, property development, and legal consultancy, he pursued this degree not for career advancement but to make a significant societal impact. He acknowledged USM’s international reputation and academic excellence as key motivators in his pursuit of knowledge.

Future Contributions

Through his research, Dr. Luk intends to provide insights into Hong Kong’s complex housing market and contribute to the broader global discourse on the subject. He hopes that his educational journey will serve as a reminder that the pursuit of knowledge and personal development remains accessible at any age.
