Nursing Student’s Transformative Experience: 2-Week Clinical Attachment at Singapore’s National University Hospital

Several nursing students from the International Medical University (IMU) recently engaged in a two-week clinical attachment at the National University Hospital (NUH) in Singapore. This initiative is part of IMU’s student mobility program, designed to enhance educational experiences by exposing students to various healthcare systems.

Clinical Focus and Motivation

One participant focused on the oncology and palliative care unit, motivated by previous observations of challenges faced by cancer patients during a past hospital visit. Her placement at the National University Cancer Institute, recognized for its treatment of both pediatric and adult cancers, was facilitated by her application.

Orientation and Facility Tour

The clinical attachment began with an orientation on the first day, followed by a detailed tour of the facility, which included visits to specialized clinics and chemotherapy centers. Throughout the attachment, the student observed advanced therapeutic practices such as limb cryocompression therapy and bedside stem cell harvesting utilized in the treatment of leukemia.

Collaboration with Healthcare Professionals

In the subsequent week, she collaborated with the palliative care team, comprising a multidisciplinary group of healthcare professionals. This experience provided her with a deeper understanding of the complexities involved in end-of-life care, highlighting the necessity of addressing not only physical symptoms but also the emotional and spiritual needs of patients and their families.

Reflections and Acknowledgments

The participant acknowledged the significance of the experience gained during the attachment, appreciating the collaborative atmosphere among healthcare practitioners at NUH. The program contributed to her clinical knowledge and solidified her commitment to holistic patient care.

In concluding her reflections, she expressed gratitude to her clinical instructors and IMU lecturers for their continuous support and guidance throughout her educational experience.
