Exploring Life in Malaysia: A Middle Eastern Student’s Journey at SEGi University

Afrin Shama Jannatul, a student from Saudi Arabia, experienced a significant cultural shift upon her arrival in Malaysia. The environment, marked by different spices, a lively street culture, and the sounds of motorcycles, contrasted sharply with her previous experiences, including the familiar scents of her family home. Afrin enrolled in a psychology program at SEGi College Subang Jaya but encountered considerable emotional challenges associated with being away from her family in an unfamiliar country.

Adapting to a New Culture

Upon arrival, Afrin received a warm welcome at the airport; however, she soon faced the complexities of adapting to a new culture. Routine activities, such as grocery shopping and navigating public transport, presented difficulties in her new environment.

Challenges During the Pandemic

The situation became more challenging when the COVID-19 pandemic prompted lockdown measures, leading to quieter streets that amplified Afrin’s sense of isolation. In reflecting on this experience, she described it as a time when opportunities for social connection were significantly limited. Additionally, she faced the loss of basketball, an important activity that had previously served as a means for managing stress.
