MMU Grüne Welt’s Journey in Advancing Sustainable Mobility at Shell Eco-marathon Qatar 2026

MMU Grüne Welt recently participated in the Shell Eco-marathon Qatar 2026, held from January 21 to 25 at the Lusail International Circuit in Doha. This event represented a significant milestone for the team in their commitment to advancing sustainable mobility.
Team Composition and Preparation
The team, comprising primarily engineering students from Multimedia University (MMU) specializing in Mechanical Engineering and Robotics & Automation Engineering, was supported by faculty advisors Dr. Lim Boon Kian, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Liew Kia Wai, and Dr. Lim Chee Siong. Over several months of preparation, the students focused on enhancing their battery-electric prototype vehicle. This included improvements in lightweight construction, system reliability, aerodynamic efficiency, and energy management to meet the competition’s rigorous standards.
About the Shell Eco-marathon
The Shell Eco-marathon is renowned as one of the leading student engineering competitions globally, drawing international teams tasked with designing, building, and operating ultra-energy-efficient vehicles. Teams must complete thorough technical and safety inspections before participating in races, demonstrating compliance with established safety and engineering criteria.
Competition Results
At the Qatar competition, MMU Grüne Welt was one of only 19 teams out of 33 in the battery-electric prototype category that successfully completed the necessary inspections and maintained consistent performance on the track, despite adverse weather and difficult track conditions. The team recorded their best result of 304 km/kWh, achieving first place among Malaysian teams and ranking seventh in the Asia-Pacific and Middle East regions, marking a historic high for the team.
Acknowledgments
The team expressed appreciation for the support received from MMU, the Faculty of Engineering and Technology (FET), Telekom Malaysia (TM), and various industry partners, which played a crucial role in their success throughout the competition. Additional thanks were extended to Shell Malaysia and the Malaysian Youth in Qatar (Qampung) for their hospitality during the event.
Future Aspirations
Following the Qatar competition, MMU Grüne Welt aims to apply insights gained to enhance future initiatives and continue its mission of innovating within the energy-efficient vehicle engineering sector, representing both MMU and Malaysia on the international stage.
