Dhaka University Vice Chancellor Calls for Democratic Values to Uphold July Uprising’s Achievements
Dhaka University Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. A. B. M. Obaidul Islam has emphasized the need to establish democratic values, justice, freedom of expression and mutual respect to make the achievements of the July Mass Uprising meaningful.
He made the remarks as the chief guest at a discussion titled “July Mass Uprising: Democratic Reconstruction and Expectations for the Bangladesh of Tomorrow”, organized by the Faculty of Arts at the R. C. Majumdar Arts Auditorium on 9 August 2026.
The Vice Chancellor said it is important to understand why students took to the streets, what they expected from the movement and how they envision Bangladesh’s future. He stressed that the country must learn from past political practices and move toward a culture based on democracy, justice and respect for differing opinions.
He also highlighted the importance of preventing the return of authoritarian practices, suppression of dissent and political influence within educational institutions. Referring to the sacrifices made during the uprising, he said justice must be ensured through the rule of law rather than revenge.
Calling for unity under the principle of “Bangladesh First,” Professor Obaidul Islam urged citizens to work together to build a democratic, just, humane and prosperous Bangladesh for future generations.
