School of Law Enhances Community Legal Awareness Through Outreach Initiatives at Africa University

The School of Law at Africa University has launched a community legal awareness outreach program in Manicaland through its Law Clinic. This initiative seeks to enhance public legal education and community service, particularly aimed at individuals in remote areas who need information to make informed decisions, protect their rights, and improve community well-being.
Collaborative Event in Zimunya Village
On February 18, 2026, the School of Law collaborated with the Zimbabwe Gender Commission to host an event in Zimunya Village. During this participatory session, participants discussed a range of critical issues including gender equality, property inheritance, succession planning, early child marriages, gender-based violence (GBV), and broader human rights topics. Community members actively engaged by posing questions and sharing personal experiences, particularly regarding legal challenges faced by vulnerable groups such as women and children.
Importance of Succession Planning
Mr. Victor Nkiwane, Head of the Department of Procedural Law at Africa University, highlighted the significance of will preparation. He noted that succession planning serves as both a legal framework and a means to preserve family harmony, warning that dying intestate can lead to conflicts over property distribution, negatively impacting families, particularly widows and children.
Discussion on Early Child Marriages
In addition, third-year law students facilitated discussions on early child marriages, emphasizing the harmful effects on girls’ education and health, as well as the long-term social and psychological consequences. They stressed the importance of parents, guardians, and community leaders in providing adequate support and guidance to safeguard children’s development.
Addressing Domestic Violence
The students also addressed the effects of domestic violence, particularly how it influences children who witness abuse, stating that such experiences can impede emotional growth and hinder the formation of healthy relationships in the future. The discussions promoted recognition of domestic abuse signs and advocated for peaceful conflict resolution, while underscoring parental responsibility and the importance of positive behavior modeling.
Support from Community Leaders
Chief Zimunya, the traditional leader of the Zimunya community, expressed appreciation for the program, acknowledging its role in delivering vital legal education and human rights awareness to the village. He encouraged community members to apply the knowledge acquired during the event in their everyday lives.
Future Outreach Initiatives
Africa University is focused on enhancing community engagement through outreach initiatives designed to promote justice and informed citizenship. The School of Law plans to expand these legal outreach efforts to additional regions, including Sakubva, Honde Valley, Nyanga, Mutare Remand Prison, and Tongogara Refugee Settlement.
