UNAIR Students Innovate Renewable Energy Solutions for Community Development

Students from Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) participated in a community service project focused on renewable energy aimed at enhancing local development. This initiative took place in Panglungan Village, Wonosalam, Jombang, from May 11 to 13, 2025, with the objective of creating a self-sustaining “energy village” to improve economic activities for local farmers and small producers of goods such as vegetables, durian, and coffee.
Project Leadership and Goals
The project was led by Mochamad Rafi Pratama Hariyanto Putra, a 2022 medical student and recipient of the Pertamina Foundation Sobat Bumi scholarship. Putra and his fellow scholarship recipients designed the project to address ongoing water shortages in the village, particularly during the dry season, which had adversely impacted daily life and agricultural productivity.
Innovative Solutions Implemented
To confront these challenges, the students implemented several innovations, including the installation of solar panels to generate renewable energy, the establishment of solar-powered water pumps, and the provision of training sessions for local residents on system usage and maintenance. Additionally, water tanks were put in place as reservoirs. These solar panels facilitated the transfer of water from local springs to residential areas.
Community Response
The community’s response to the project has been positive, with residents expressing appreciation for improved access to clean water. Many villagers began utilizing the new system soon after its installation, resulting in a more consistent water supply even during drought conditions.
Future Developments
Future developments for the initiative include plans to establish a hydroponic farming area integrated with a fishpond, with implementation set to begin in July 2025. This expansion aims to provide nutritious food while generating additional economic benefits for the local community.
Collaboration and Teamwork
Despite the small number of participants, the team was able to successfully execute the project through clear role divisions, reflecting the collaborative spirit among UNAIR students focused on fostering sustainable and self-reliant rural communities.
