Prof. Heri Hermansyah Dilantik sebagai Rektor Universitas Indonesia 2024-2029
On December 4, 2024, Prof. Dr. Ir. Heri Hermansyah, S.T., M.Eng., IPU, was officially inaugurated as the Rector of Universitas Indonesia (UI) for the 2024-2029 term. The ceremony took place at Balai Purnomo Prawiro on the UI campus in Depok, presided over by Dr. (H.C.) K.H. Yahya Cholil Staquf, the Chairman of the UI Board of Trustees. The event was attended by the Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology of Indonesia, Prof. Ir. Satryo Soemantri Brodjonegoro, M.Sc., Ph.D.
Appointment Details
Prof. Hermansyah’s appointment follows a decision by the UI Board of Trustees (MWA) documented in Decision Number 019/SK/MWA-UI/2024, which officially ended the tenure of former Rector Prof. Ari Kuncoro, S.E., M.A., Ph.D. The Minister acknowledged the contributions of Prof. Kuncoro during his time in office, referencing several national and international achievements, including UI’s recognition in the 2024 Top Government Public Relations GPR Award for exceptional digital communication management.

In his remarks, the Minister congratulated Prof. Hermansyah and stated expectations for enhanced development at UI, urging the need for the institution to uphold high quality and impactful education on both national and international levels.
Selection Process
Prof. Hermansyah was chosen following a comprehensive selection process conducted between July and September 2024, which included multiple evaluation stages designed to ensure accountability and transparency during the appointment process. The Chairman of MWA expressed confidence in Prof. Hermansyah’s capabilities as a leader.
Strategic Plans
As the new Rector, Prof. Hermansyah plans to implement five primary strategies comprising a total of fifteen priority programs to improve university performance. These strategies focus on Empowering Entrepreneurship, Enhancing Education Access and Quality, Promoting Impactful Research and Innovation, Increasing Global Competitiveness, and Advancing Good Governance and Cultural Transformation.

During his speech, Prof. Hermansyah emphasized the necessity for UI to compete globally in research and innovation while fostering an entrepreneurial mindset to secure financial resources for quality educational outcomes. He reaffirmed UI’s crucial role in facilitating national development and addressing the educational needs of the country.
Acknowledging Previous Leadership
The inauguration ceremony also recognized the achievements of previous leadership, particularly in navigating challenges related to the COVID-19 pandemic and prevailing geopolitical tensions. The former Rector expressed optimism regarding Prof. Hermansyah’s leadership, expressing a desire to build upon existing accomplishments while preparing for future challenges in academia.

About Prof. Heri Hermansyah
Prof. Heri Hermansyah, born on January 18, 1976, in Sukabumi, West Java, is a notable academic figure, previously becoming the youngest full professor at UI’s Faculty of Engineering in 2013. Before his appointment as Rector, he held the position of Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at UI from 2022 to 2024, where he contributed significantly to improving the faculty’s rankings in various respected assessments.
