HELP University: Empowering Community and Environment Through Service Initiatives

HELP University conducted its Day of Service on October 19, 2024, which involved approximately 300 employees from various departments, including senior leadership, academic staff, and administrative teams. This event, themed “Courage, Compassion, Change and Community,” took place at multiple locations across Klang Valley, reflecting the institution’s commitment to environmental sustainability and community service.

Engagement in Service Projects

Participants engaged in a range of service projects during the event. Activities included environmental initiatives such as cleaning riverbanks, restoring green spaces, and sorting materials at recycling centers, aimed at promoting sustainable practices. Community engagement efforts featured painting school facilities, providing meals to refugee centers and senior homes, facilitating reading programs for underprivileged children, and conducting craft and sandwich-making classes.

Embracing Challenges and Inspirations

The Day of Service was not only about completing specific tasks; it also encouraged staff to step outside their daily routines and comfort zones. The event served as a platform for reflection on the challenges faced by the environment and underserved communities, with participants expressing renewed dedication to promoting societal change and environmental preservation.

University Mission and Core Values

Professor Dr. Liew Teik Kooi, Vice Chancellor of HELP University, highlighted that the Day of Service aligns with the university’s broader mission. He noted the event’s role in illustrating core values by allowing participants to witness firsthand the difficulties encountered by their communities and the environment. Through their acts of service, immediate needs were addressed while fostering inspiration for long-term solutions.

Positive Effects and Educational Engagement

The event emphasized HELP University’s core values, including achievement, teamwork, and compassion, as staff observed the immediate positive effects of their contributions. Dr. Goh Chee Leong, Co-Chief Executive Officer (Tertiary) of HELP Education Group, reiterated the significance of the day, indicating it provided a platform for educators to confront societal challenges directly and encourage students to engage in solutions.

HELP University acknowledged the contributions of various organizations that participated in the Day of Service, including Praise Emmanuel Children’s Home, Amitabha Malaysia, MILO Malaysia, and The Rotary Club of Bukit Kiara Sunrise, which were essential in facilitating this significant event.
