Autumn Graduation Celebrates Students’ Achievements: ‘You Have Met Your Standard’

UCT Autumn Graduation Celebrates 6,185 Graduates with Honors and Inspiration

A five-day celebration of achievement and perseverance concluded with the graduation of 6,185 students from the University of Cape Town’s six faculties, including doctoral candidates. The ceremonies marked a milestone in the academic and personal journeys of graduates, while welcoming them into the vibrant UCT alumni community.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Mosa Moshabela highlighted the importance of the moment: “The ceremonies in the Sarah Baartman Hall will recognise not only individual accomplishment, but also the shared effort that sustains a university community.”

This season, former UCT Chancellor Graça Machel capped her granddaughter, Zizile-Graca Machel Mucave, during the Humanities graduation ceremony on 1 April. The same ceremony also celebrated distinguished musician George Werner, who received a Doctor of Music (honoris causa) for his contribution to South African jazz. Humanitarian Dr Imtiaz Sooliman was similarly honoured with a Doctor of Philosophy (honoris causa) a day earlier.

Professor Moshabela noted that both honorees “demonstrate what it means to lead with purpose and to serve society with integrity,” adding, “Excellence must be matched by service, and talent must be guided by values.”

The ceremonies were filled with emotion, applause, and celebration as graduates, families, educators, and friends shared in the milestone. Moshabela thanked those who supported the students’ journey: “Thank you to faculty staff and families who have put in work over the years. Your support has helped our graduates reach this momentous occasion.”

He emphasized UCT’s commitment to excellence: “We set the bar high, not to block your path, but to ensure you meet a standard of excellence. You were measured, and you have conquered. I am confident that you will succeed in your future endeavors. Fear not, pursue your passion, trust your journey, and hold onto values of excellence, kindness, compassion, and humility.”

Graduates were reminded of their ongoing role as ambassadors of the university. “We want to follow your stories, celebrate your successes, and see you represent yourselves well in the world,” Moshabela said.

Adding to the celebration, praise poet Neliswa Sampi honored the graduates, highlighted their achievements, and thanked families and university staff for supporting this significant milestone.
