High School Students Experience Medical Careers at Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar
Twenty-four high school students recently took part in the Qatar Medical Explorer Program (QMEP) at Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar (WCM-Q), experiencing campus life over the course of a week. This initiative is organized by WCM-Q’s Office of Student Outreach and Educational Development and aims to provide students with insights into medical education and various career opportunities within the field.
Student Selection and Participation
Students are nominated for participation by their high school counselors and teachers, with consideration given to their academic excellence, particularly in subjects such as science and mathematics.
Curriculum and Activities
Throughout their stay at WCM-Q, participants engaged in activities that reflected the experiences of current medical students. The curriculum offered instruction in biology, anatomy, and clinical skills, alongside specialized topics, including plastic and reconstructive surgery, research methodologies, and problem-based learning. Additionally, attendees received guidance on effective study techniques, time management, crafting personal statements, interview skills, medical school applications, and exploring diverse medical careers.
Oral Presentation Component
The program also included an oral presentation component, where students conducted research on a medical topic and presented their results to both peers and faculty members at WCM-Q. This winter session of QMEP included students from eleven different schools, such as The Academic Bridge Program, Al Arqam Academy for Girls, and the American School of Doha, among others.

Dr. Syed Ahmed Hasnain, senior manager of student outreach and educational development at WCM-Q, commended the students’ aptitude and maturity demonstrated throughout the program. He noted the benefits of experiencing medical student life and the potential career paths available through medical education.

Dr. Rachid Bendriss, associate dean for foundation, student outreach, and educational development programs, underscored the significance of such enrichment initiatives, stating that they provide students with vital insights into what studying at WCM-Q entails. This approach helps students make informed decisions about pursuing careers in science.
