Africa University Startup Fundixa Shortlisted for VivaTech 2026 Final Selection

Africa University’s student-led startup, Fundixa Virtual School, has been shortlisted among Zimbabwe’s leading university-based innovations for the VivaTech 2026 final selection. The announcement was made following a selection meeting held on February 26, 2026, in Harare, where the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Professor Engineer Talon Garikayi, represented the university.

Shortlisting Journey

From a pool of over 55 applications submitted by universities across the country, Fundixa earned one of the top 17 shortlisted startup positions. The team consists of Computer Science students Tapiwa Mukoyi, Emmanuel Ezugwu, and Software Engineering student Courtney Fradreck Taga, who presented their innovation to a panel of judges, seeking to secure a place in the top 10 that will represent Zimbabwe at the VivaTech event in Paris in June.

Fundixa Virtual School is an AI-driven educational platform aimed at tackling educational challenges in Zimbabwe, particularly amidst a nationwide teacher shortage and the high costs associated with private tutoring. The platform offers features such as ZIMSEC-aligned structured video lessons, downloadable notes, quizzes, and AI-generated feedback, with the goal of enhancing educational access for students in rural and low-connectivity areas. The subscription starts at US$2 per month, potentially increasing access to quality education throughout Zimbabwe.

Alignment with Educational Frameworks

The initiative aligns with Zimbabwe’s Education 5.0 framework and Sustainable Development Goal 4, which emphasizes the importance of quality education. Terry Gomera, Africa University’s Innovation Officer, noted the potential for establishing strategic partnerships within the innovation landscape, as the university seeks to nurture a creative and entrepreneurial environment among its students.

Transformative Experiences

Participants in the project reported transformative experiences during the pitching process. Mukoyi highlighted valuable exposure to various university innovations and opportunities for collaboration. Ezugwu reflected on the growth experienced throughout the pitching process, while Taga found inspiration from fellow innovators at the event.

Looking Ahead

The final announcement regarding the top 10 startups is anticipated next week, as Africa University continues to support student-driven innovation and entrepreneurship within a diverse academic framework. The institution is focused on producing graduates equipped to address societal challenges effectively.
