International Academic Conference on Cultural Exchange and Sustainable Development at Beijing Normal University

The International Academic Conference on “Cultural Exchange and Sustainable Development” took place on November 28 at the Jingshi Hotel of Beijing Normal University (BNU). The conference convened nearly one hundred experts and scholars from various countries, including China, the United States, France, and Switzerland, to exchange insights and promote international cultural collaboration.

Opening Remarks

In the opening remarks, Kang Zhen, Vice President of BNU, highlighted the critical role of cultural exchange in supporting sustainable development and fostering a unified future for humanity. He underscored the importance of enhancing positive cultural communication and collaborating with like-minded communities worldwide, especially in times of international discord.

Keynote Speakers

Prominent keynote speakers at the conference included Huang Huilin, a Senior Professor at BNU, who examined the historical openness of Chinese civilization shaped by continuous cultural exchanges. She asserted that a multipolar world is essential for the advancement of human civilization.

Roger T. Ames, Vice Chairman of the International Confucian Association and Berggruen Professor at Peking University, emphasized the significance of understanding interdependent relationships in cultural exchanges as a prerequisite for sustainable development. Professor Lu Di from Peking University contributed to the discourse by presenting the “Surrounding Communication Theory,” a distinguished concept in Chinese philosophy and social sciences.

Cultural Forms and Education

Additionally, Professor Andrea Riemenschnitter from the University of Zurich discussed the implications of cultural forms, such as poetry and tourism, in contemporary sustainable development. Joël Bellassen from INALCO provided insights into the creation of the “Dongba Culture MOOC” and addressed the current challenges within international Chinese language education.

Future Directions for Chinese Culture

The conference also included parallel forums and a dialogue session where participants explored future directions for global communication of Chinese culture. The overarching discussions centered on the role of academic partnerships in promoting harmony, peace, and sustainable development amidst global challenges.

The event concluded with a group photo of participants, symbolizing a successful gathering focused on advancing cultural dialogue and cooperation.
