Khon Kaen University Launches Thai Language and Culture Center in Leeds, UK

Khon Kaen University has inaugurated a Thai Language and Culture Center at Buddharam Temple in Leeds, UK, as of October 12, 2025. This initiative has been developed through a partnership between Khon Kaen University, Buddharam Temple, and the Faculty of Arts, Humanities & Cultures at the University of Leeds.
Inauguration Ceremony
The opening ceremony featured a number of distinguished attendees, including H.E. Thani Thongphakdi, the Thai Ambassador to the UK; Councillor Dan Cohen, the Lord Mayor of Leeds; Surapon Petch-Vra, Vice Chairman of the Khon Kaen University Council; and Associate Professor Dr. Charnchai Panthongviriyakul, President of Khon Kaen University. Additionally, representatives from the University of Leeds, including Professors Emma Cayley and Martin Seeger, were present.
Purpose of the Center
The newly established center is intended to promote the Thai language and culture on an international scale, facilitating both academic and cultural exchanges to enhance understanding between Thailand and the UK. Phrakhru Siridhammaprateep, the abbot of Buddharam Temple, indicated that the center will be instrumental in educating future generations about Thai heritage and fostering relationships between the two countries.
Opportunities for Cultural Exchange
Associate Professor Dr. Charnchai Panthongviriyakul highlighted the center’s role as a platform for cultural exchange, educational opportunities, and international collaboration. The center aims to increase the visibility of Thai culture and provide resources for students and members of the Thai community with an interest in cultural studies.
Summer Course and Internships
Before the center’s official inauguration, a “Thai Language and Culture Summer Course 2025” was held, focusing on teaching basic Thai language skills and cultural protocols through experiential learning. The center will also offer internship opportunities for students from both Khon Kaen University and the University of Leeds, promoting a more comprehensive understanding of various languages and cultures.
