Curtin Malaysia Library Enhances Information Literacy Skills for Vocational Students

On September 23, 2025, the Library team at Curtin University Malaysia organized an Information Literacy Workshop for 65 students at Miri Vocational College. This initiative seeks to enhance the educational outreach of the university beyond its campus.
Workshop Overview
Under the guidance of librarians Nora Hii and Jackie Richard, the workshop covered six essential components of information literacy: task definition, information-seeking strategies, resource location and access, information use, synthesis, and evaluation. These competencies are vital not only for academic achievement but also for informed decision-making in daily life.
Importance of Information Literacy
The workshop also highlighted the significance of information literacy in the ethical and effective utilization of artificial intelligence (AI), which is increasingly relevant in the current digital environment.
Outreach and Goals
As part of the outreach program to schools in the Miri region, Hii remarked on the initiative’s goal to provide students with a solid foundation for their future educational and career opportunities.
Student Engagement
A special session during the program included a discussion led by Samson Philip, the Manager for Student Recruitment and Conversion at Curtin Malaysia, who outlined opportunities available to graduating students and pathways to undergraduate studies.
Impact and Future Connections
The engagement level among students during the workshop was significant, with many expressing appreciation for the knowledge gained on how information literacy contributes to lifelong learning, career readiness, and responsible technology use.
