First Malaysian Cardiothoracic Surgeon Awarded Royal College of Surgeons Fellowship at Universiti Malaya

Professor Dr. Sivakumar Krishnasamy, a cardiothoracic surgeon and professor at the Faculty of Medicine at Universiti Malaya, has distinguished himself by becoming the first Malaysian to be awarded the Fellowship in Faculty of Surgical Trainers by the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh (RCSEd). This recognition was conferred during the Royal College Diplomate Ceremony held at the Park Royal Collection Hotel in Kuala Lumpur.

The Fellowship is a prestigious honor in the international surgical community, recognizing surgeons who have demonstrated exceptional commitment to surgical education and leadership. In response to receiving the fellowship, Professor Sivakumar remarked on the significance of this recognition in an academic environment where the primary focus is on training future surgeons to be valuable assets to the nation. He indicated that the fellowship acknowledges his devotion to surgical education and his efforts to enhance standards within cardiothoracic surgery.

The Multiplier Effect of Training

Professor Sivakumar articulated the multiplier effect of training others, stating that while he can save individual lives, empowering others to become skilled surgeons allows for a broader impact on patient care. He highlighted the pressing need to advance cardiothoracic surgery in Malaysia to address the increasing number of patients requiring treatment for heart and lung conditions.

Future Initiatives

Looking ahead, Professor Sivakumar plans to spearhead a new initiative aimed at establishing a Master’s in Cardiothoracic Surgery program at Universiti Malaya. He noted the intention to align this program with international standards, aspiring to position Universiti Malaya as a center of excellence for cardiothoracic surgical training, benefiting not only Malaysia but also the ASEAN region.

The Vice Chancellor of Universiti Malaya, Professor Dato’ Seri Ir.
