USeP and SEAMEO Host International Training on Holistic School Health for SEN Learners

The University of Southeastern Philippines (USeP) partnered with the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization Regional Centre for Special Educational Needs (SEAMEO SEN) to conduct a two-day international training program aimed at holistic school health for learners with special educational needs. This event took place on August 6–7, 2025, in the CIC Audio-Visual Room at the Obrero Campus in Davao City, themed “Cultivating Inclusive Schools: Holistic Well-being for Every Learner.”

Training Overview

The training convened educators, school leaders, and advocates from across Southeast Asia, focusing on the discussion and promotion of inclusive, equitable, and health-oriented educational environments. The opening remarks were delivered by Dr. Jeneifer C. Nueva, USeP Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dr. Bonifacio G. Gabales, Jr., USeP President, and Mr. Ahmad Heikhal Amir Hamzah from SEAMEO SEN, emphasizing the importance of health, inclusion, and collaboration in supporting learners with disabilities and other special educational needs.

Initial Sessions on Holistic School Health

Ms. Vilma L. Dimaisip, a Master Teacher from the Integrated Special Education Center in San Pablo City, led initial sessions that examined the various dimensions of holistic school health and the advocacy for safety and protective practices within schools. These discussions addressed critical issues such as bullying and disaster preparedness while outlining best practices for creating a safe, inclusive school environment.

Presentations and Insights

Additional presentations included Dr. Susan Vincent D. Villarente from USeP, who highlighted the importance of teaching health habits, hygiene, and nutrition in alignment with WHO/UNESCO guidelines. Dr. Kwun Hang Lau from Hong Kong provided insights on transforming schools into community-friendly hubs.

Disability-Inclusive Education

On the second day of the training, Mr. Ahmad Heikhal Amir Hamzah conducted sessions on Disability-Inclusive Education and Universal Design for Learning, equipping educators with strategies to mitigate barriers and accommodate diverse learning needs.

Action Planning Workshop

An Action Planning Workshop, facilitated by Assoc. Prof. Henry C. Encabo, brought together participants from special needs and early childhood education programs to develop actionable plans aimed at implementing holistic practices in their local educational contexts.

Conclusion and Commitment

The program concluded with the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement between USeP and SEAMEO SEN, reaffirming their commitment to inclusive education. Dr. Raquel D. Almasa, Dean of the College of Education, provided closing remarks, thanking attendees for their participation and contributions.

Participants expressed their commitment to enhancing the health and inclusivity of their schools as a direct outcome of the training.
