MSU Marawi Hosts Indonesian Leimena Group for Peace Initiative Collaboration with New System President Atty. Paisalin P.D. Tago, CPA

On July 23, 2024, Mindanao State University (MSU) in Marawi hosted a delegation from the Indonesian Leimena Group, facilitated by the Philippine Center for Islam and Democracy (PCID) under the leadership of Amina Rasul. The purpose of the visit was to explore opportunities for cooperation aimed at enhancing cross-cultural religious literacy and promoting peace initiatives. Atty. Paisalin P.D. Tago, the newly appointed President of the MSU System, emphasized the potential for collaborative efforts in these areas.
Delegation Discussions
The delegation, led by Executive Director Matius Ho and accompanied by Atty. Salma Rasul from PCID, engaged in discussions addressing critical issues such as Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism (PCVE). The discussions underscored MSU Marawi’s dedication to addressing these challenges. A significant outcome from these talks was the proposal for a Youth Peace Security certificate course, designed to provide young individuals with the skills necessary for advocating peace. Additionally, the delegation suggested incorporating cross-cultural religious literacy into the core peace education curriculum to promote mutual respect among diverse communities.
Involvement of MSU Officials
Several officials from MSU took part in the discussions, including Vice President Dr. Alma Berowa and Dr. Melba Angni from the Internationalization and Linkages Offices. Representatives from the Institute for Peace and Development in Mindanao (IPDM), such as Executive Director Dr. Acram Latiph, Dr. Aliah Pacalna Cali-Pascan, Dr. Khayronesah Abbas, Prof. Almahdi Alonto, and Prof. Cora Mangelen, also contributed to the dialogue.
Cultural Engagement
As part of the visit, the Leimena Group toured the Aga Khan Museum, where they were welcomed by Museum Director Dr. Linang Macabalang, reflecting the rich cultural heritage of MSU.
Review and Future Collaborations
Following the discussions, the delegation met with Atty. Paisalin P.D. Tago and Dr. Minerva Mambuay Naga, Chairperson of the Transition Committee, to review the outcomes and explore potential partnership avenues. Proposed collaborations include the revision of the manual for Fundamental Peace Education and the establishment of the Youth Peace and Security Certificate Program. This engagement represents a significant step forward in promoting peace, understanding, and educational development within the region.
