Miri, Sarawak – On August 1, 2025, Curtin University Malaysia entered into a partnership with Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) to launch a tree-planting campaign focused on enhancing environmental awareness and promoting community involvement. The initiative saw over 100 participants from both organizations collectively planting 100 trees across eight designated areas on the Curtin Malaysia campus.
Alignment with Greening Sarawak Campaign
This initiative is aligned with Sarawak’s Greening Sarawak campaign, which aims to plant 35 million trees by 2025. During the event, participants were challenged to plant trees within a one-hour timeframe, emphasizing the importance of collective action in achieving significant environmental outcomes.
Insights from Sarawak Energy
Michael Wong, Senior Manager II at SEB’s ICT Department, highlighted the initiative’s broader implications, stating that it represents not only tree planting but also a commitment to environmental sustainability through collaboration. SEB has set a goal to plant and protect 500,000 trees across Sarawak by 2030 and has reported substantial progress, including the successful planting of over 188,000 trees in various locations.

Sharon Chong, Chief Operating Officer of Curtin Malaysia, underscored the potential impact of such initiatives on promoting sustainability. She remarked that planting a tree symbolizes hope, responsibility, and proactive measures for the future.

The tree-planting event was attended by notable university leaders, including Professor Tang Fu Ee, Dean of Learning and Teaching; Professor Pauline Ho, Dean of the Faculty of Business; and Associate Professor Ir. Dr. Lim Chye Ing, Associate Dean of External Engagement in the Faculty of Engineering and Science.
