Promoting Mental Well-being Among Youth: IMU’s Collaboration at National Youth Day 2025

In conjunction with National Youth Day 2025, the School of Psychology and Social Sciences (SOPSS) at International Medical University (IMU) participated in mental health consultation services during the national-level event held on June 14 and 15, 2025, at Merdeka Square, Kuala Lumpur. The event was organized by the Ministry of Youth and Sports in partnership with the Malaysia Youth Council and was officially opened by Prime Minister YAB Dato’ Seri Anwar Bin Ibrahim.

Establishment of Mental Health Booth

As part of the ‘Wadah Insan’ segment, IMU established a mental health booth, allowing students to apply their theoretical knowledge in a practical environment. The collaboration fostered connections between public and private sectors and aimed to enhance the students’ understanding of community mental health needs.

Student Involvement

Students enrolled in the Master of Clinical Psychology (MCP) and Master of Counselling (MOC) programs utilized their academic training in real-world scenarios, applying core competencies such as active listening and culturally responsive approaches during public interactions. Eleven students, under the guidance of lecturers Nur Arfah Bt Zaini and Chin Hui Sian, volunteered to offer various mental health services, including metaphorical card sessions, career assessments, and mental health evaluations.

Appreciation for Participation

SOPSS expressed appreciation for its involvement in the national event, highlighting the significance of raising mental well-being awareness among Malaysian youth.

Feedback from IMU Volunteers

Puteri Jasmine Tan Binti Kamarulzaman, a final semester intern counsellor at the Psychology Management Division of the Ministry of Works, acknowledged the enhanced communication skills gained through mutual understanding with visitors. She noted that many participants found comfort and empowerment through metaphorical cards, which facilitated personal reflection on their strengths.

Pham Thi Yen, an international student from Vietnam currently interning at a private college, served as a facilitator during the event. She emphasized the role of metaphorical cards in fostering emotional openness, enabling participants to share personal experiences that are often kept private. She conveyed gratitude for the opportunity to participate in mental health awareness initiatives.

Significance of the Event

Chin Hui Sian, a lecturer in the MOC program, underscored the importance of the event as a platform for students to engage with various youth organizations. She highlighted the training provided for administering mental health screenings and career exploration tools, which contributed to increased awareness of mental health issues within the community.

The joint efforts of IMU and input from youth leaders signify a positive step towards addressing mental health challenges among youth in Malaysia.
