“Join SNU’s International Summer Program for a Unique Academic and Cultural Experience”

Seoul National University (SNU) has annually hosted the International Summer Program (ISP) since its establishment in 2007, under the management of the Office of International Affairs. This program aims to provide students with a blend of academic learning and cultural experiences, enabling them to engage in academic life at SNU while exploring the cultural heritage of Korea. Over the course of two decades, more than 5,000 students from various countries have participated in this five-week initiative.

Course Offerings

The ISP offers more than 40 courses taught in English across diverse fields, including Arts and Humanities, Business and Economics, and Science and Technology. A Korean language course is also available, with students placed at different levels based on their language proficiency. All courses are delivered by SNU faculty and visiting professors, with an updated curriculum each year to align with evolving student interests and global trends.

Current Year Course Highlights

Course offerings in the current year included foundational subjects such as Data Analysis, Economic Policy, Game Theory, and Computer Science. Additionally, several courses focused on Korea’s unique sociopolitical landscape, addressing topics such as Foreign Policy and the Global Competitiveness of Korean Companies.

Experiential Learning in the Arts

The arts component of the program emphasizes experiential learning. In the Korean Art and Asian Painting course, students acquired traditional Korean painting techniques while reinterpreting these styles in contemporary contexts. Meanwhile, those enrolled in Korean Art and Terracotta Sculpture explored the cultural importance of terracotta art through the creation of their unique figures.

Cultural Engagement

Outside of the academic setting, the ISP enhances participants’ exposure to contemporary Korean culture. Notably, the SNU-Fun classes, offered in collaboration with the SNU Center for Sport Development and Promotion, provide students with free, one-day sessions that facilitate cultural engagement through activities such as taekwondo, traditional dance, and K-pop dance.

Field Trips and Cultural Exploration

Field trips are a significant aspect of the program, with the initial excursion this year providing an extensive introduction to Seoul. Participants toured key landmarks, including Gyeongbokgung Palace, Insa-dong, Gwangjang Market, and the National Museum of Korea. Subsequent trips focused on cultural exploration and entertainment, featuring visits to the DMZ, Everland Theme Park, and a performance of “The Painters” at the Gwanghwamun Theater.

Conclusion

The International Summer Program at SNU offers an intensive academic and cultural experience in Korea. Individuals interested in the program are encouraged to consider applying for the next session.
