NJU Students Explore the Ocean Through OUC Program: A Unique Hands-On Experience

More than 130 educators and students from the Ocean University of China, Nanjing University, Beijing Normal University, and Shandong University recently participated in an educational expedition in the waters near Qingdao, Shandong province. The participants were organized into two groups, with each group spending two days and one night aboard the vessel Dongfanghong 3.

Collaborative Learning Experience

A student specializing in modern Chinese literature reported that the experience offered valuable insights into the extensive nature of the ocean. She highlighted that onboard classes fostered a collaborative environment, where students from diverse disciplines were able to share thoughts and ideas in an interdisciplinary atmosphere.

Expanded Participation

Originally limited to students from the Ocean University of China, the program has since been expanded to include participants from various universities across the country. This development has increased access to firsthand experiences related to ocean exploration.

The Dongfanghong 3 Vessel

The Dongfanghong 3 is a 5,000-metric-ton vessel utilized as a floating classroom and research platform. Instruction onboard covers fundamental concepts in oceanography.

Course Offerings

Courses offered during the program encompass a variety of topics, including methods of human ocean exploration and understanding marine ecosystems. Students also participate in hands-on scientific research activities, such as measuring ocean temperature and salinity and studying marine organisms using microscopes.

Innovative Educational Methods

This initiative represents an innovative educational method, integrating theoretical learning with practical experience in the field of marine science.
