Transregionalism: The Future of Indonesia’s Diplomacy in the Asia-Pacific
Professor Baiq Lekar Sinayang Wahyu Wardhani has been inaugurated as a full professor in the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP) at Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR). The inauguration ceremony took place on December 19, 2024, at the Garuda Mukti Hall on UNAIR’s MERR-C campus. In her inaugural lecture titled “Transregionalism as a Future Agenda for Indonesia’s Diplomacy in the Pacific,” she highlighted the growing importance of the Asia-Pacific region in relation to Indonesia’s diplomatic strategies.
Historical Context of Indonesia’s Diplomacy
Wardhani pointed out that Indonesia’s diplomatic efforts have traditionally centered on Southeast Asia, which has resulted in challenges with Pacific nations. She referenced historical conflicts, such as the occupation of East Timor, confrontations with Malaysia, and ongoing disputes regarding Papua’s independence, as contributors to these strained relations. According to her analysis, these issues highlight the pressing need for Indonesia to enhance its diplomatic connections with South Pacific countries to improve regional perceptions.
Strategic Initiatives for Improvement
To address Indonesia’s perceived shortcomings in the Pacific, Wardhani outlined various strategic initiatives aimed at building trust and strengthening relationships. These initiatives encompass technology and cultural exchanges, economic collaboration, and active participation in regional dialogues, including the Pacific Islands Forum.
Introducing Transregionalism
Wardhani introduced transregionalism as a framework for Indonesia’s future diplomatic efforts. She posited that this approach corresponds with the nation’s aspiration to play a significant role on the global stage, particularly within Southeast Asia and the South Pacific. She advocated for the development of innovative and proactive strategies while preserving existing diplomatic practices.
Indonesia’s Responsibilities as an Independent Nation
As Indonesia approaches its centennial as an independent nation in 2045, Wardhani underscored the responsibilities that come with this status. She articulated that making positive contributions as a key nation in the Asia-Pacific region is essential for Indonesia’s future.
The Role of Transregionalism in Diplomacy
Wardhani asserted that Indonesia possesses the capability to act as a neutral facilitator, mediator, and stabilizer among Southeast Asian and Pacific nations. She framed transregionalism as an inclusive model that engages a diverse array of stakeholders—including states, international organizations, corporations, and individuals—in enhancing diplomatic relations in the region.
Conclusion
In conclusion, Wardhani positioned transregionalism as a fundamental component of Indonesia’s diplomatic objectives moving forward.
