From Scholar to Doctor: Inspiring Medical Journey of an IMU Graduate
An International Medical University (IMU) graduate, Shivadeva Selvamani, has discussed his educational experiences and how they contributed to his medical career path.
Choosing IMU
Selvamani selected IMU due to its comprehensive focus on medical sciences across various programs. He described the supportive faculty and engaging curriculum as significant factors in his decision-making process. Additionally, his brother, Davasooria Selvamani, a medical student at IMU at the time, provided positive insights about the faculty, which further encouraged Shivadeva’s choice.
The Foundation in Science Program
His academic journey at IMU began with the Foundation in Science (FIS) program, which he regarded as essential in fostering his interest in medicine. Selvamani characterized the FIS curriculum as a well-rounded mix of fundamental sciences and practical medical exposure, which facilitated his transition into the MBBS program. A notable milestone during this period was signing his scholarship contract for the MBBS program, a moment he commemorated with his father.
Clinical Training in Seremban
During his clinical training in Seremban, Selvamani appreciated the personalized approach to instruction. He recognized the commitment of his lecturers in promoting a thorough understanding of patient care and clinical skills through hands-on bedside teaching experiences.
Achievements at IMU
One of his significant achievements at IMU includes leading his team in the Intervarsity Battle of Skills 2024, a competition featuring participation from 20 medical universities. He acknowledged the teamwork and support he received from his mentor, Prof. Thiruselvi Subramaniam, as pivotal to their success in advancing to the semi-finals.
Simulated Training Benefits
Selvamani also pointed out the benefits of the university’s emphasis on simulated training, which employs advanced mannequins designed to closely resemble human anatomy and responses. This approach has proven advantageous for developing clinical competencies. In recognition of his efforts, he received the Dr. Tan See Leng Award and the Malaysian Medical Association Wilayah Persekutuan Award.
Leadership Roles
Currently, Selvamani holds the position of president of the IMU Surgical Society, where he led the National Global Surgery Symposium at the Seremban campus, an event that attracted over 200 medical students and physicians from across Malaysia.
Future Aspirations
At present, Selvamani is engaged in medical research and co-authoring academic papers while preparing for the MRCS Part A examination scheduled for January 15, 2025. His career aspirations include starting his housemanship in March 2025 and specializing in surgery, concentrating on trauma and cardiothoracic procedures.
Advice for Prospective Students
To prospective students, Selvamani advises respecting lecturers, utilizing daily study checklists, and participating in extracurricular activities to enrich the educational experience at IMU.
