Supporting NUS Student-Athletes to Achieve Sporting Excellence
The National University of Singapore (NUS) implements various support systems to promote a balanced lifestyle among its student-athletes, enabling them to pursue both sporting and academic excellence.
Balancing Sports and Studies
Student-athletes like Lucas Chew, a representative in finswimming, illustrate the challenge of balancing intense training with educational commitments. Currently in his second year studying Environmental Studies, Chew is the only finswimmer competing for NUS. He describes the rigorous demands of his sport as comparable to managing a dual degree, underscoring the importance of effective time and energy management.
Similarly, Janine Chew, a Year 3 Dentistry student and member of the NUS table tennis team, actively engages in competitive sports while contributing to community initiatives. She participates in programs designed to enhance access to table tennis within the NUS community, including events such as the NUS Racketlon and a Learn-to-Play Table Tennis program in partnership with the NUS Office of Student Affairs. Chew emphasizes the significance of discipline, time management, and support in balancing her responsibilities.
NUS Sports Scholarship
The NUS Sports Scholarship significantly supports students like Lucas and Janine by providing financial assistance that covers tuition fees, living expenses, and allowances. This scholarship, offering up to 20 bond-free awards per year, is intended for national athletes and individuals who make notable contributions to sports at NUS.
Recognition and Achievements
Both student-athletes have received recognition for their accomplishments. Janine and her table tennis team were honored with the Sports Team of the Year award at the NUS Achievement Awards 2024, while Lucas earned the Sportsman of the Year distinction for his achievements in finswimming and lifesaving.
International Competition Support
NUS further supports its athletes by providing funds for international competition travel, enabling participation in events such as the Finswimming World University Championship, which Lucas attended thanks to the U-SPARKS grant that assists qualifying student-athletes with their expenses.
Mentorship and Guidance
The university fosters a collaborative atmosphere, with sports managers like Lim Fang Yi and Riley Tan available to offer guidance on balancing athletic training with academic obligations. Their mentorship addresses both athletic and personal development, fostering community among the student-athlete population.
Overall Student Development
According to Associate Professor Ho Han Kiat, NUS Dean of Students, involvement in co-curricular activities is vital for comprehensive student development, equipping learners with essential life skills and enhancing community engagement. The university’s dedication to recognizing and supporting student-athletes aligns with its overarching goals to cultivate excellence in both education and sports.
Application Information
The NUS Sports Scholarship is open to students pursuing full-time undergraduate studies, with the exception of those enrolled in music programs. The next application period is set to begin in June 2025, and further details can be found on the NUS website.
