Curtin Malaysia Students Advocate for Child Protection Through Art at SK Merbau
On November 7, 2024, students from Curtin University Malaysia participated in the ‘Talian Kasih Advocacy Programme 2.0’ at SK Merbau, emphasizing their commitment to community welfare and child advocacy. This program follows a previous mural project completed at SMK Taman Tunku.
Initiative Leadership
The initiative was led by a team of General Studies diploma students from the School of Pre-U and Continuing Education (SPACE), including team leaders Aiman Amzar Mohd. Syamaizar, Denzel Tan, and Ryan Kong Zi Yan, who worked alongside lecturers Valerie Velina Nagreg and Farahezza Hairon Nizar. They designed a mural intended to symbolize the program’s dedication to child welfare, making it a lasting representation of community support for child protection.
Mural Themes and Significance
The mural incorporates imagery that reflects themes of family, unity, and protection, which align with the objectives of the Talian Kasih Helpline. Coinciding with International Children’s Day, the mural underscores the importance of safeguarding children and promoting their sense of safety within the community.
Program Organization and Support
The Talian Kasih Advocacy Programme 2.0 was organized by the Miri Division Child Welfare Team and received support from the Ministry of Women, Family, and Community Development. The program aimed to raise awareness about child protection resources, including the Talian Kasih Helpline. It featured contributions from various organizations, such as the National Population and Family Development Board (LPPKN), the National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK), and the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM). Activities included educational talks and showcases designed to enhance understanding of children’s rights and safety.
Community Acknowledgment
Jeffery Phang, Miri City Councillor, attended the event and acknowledged the initiative’s role in fostering a supportive environment for children in Miri. He emphasized the importance of community collaboration in promoting child welfare.
Raising Public Awareness
Furthermore, Mohd Firdaus Khaidir Razali, President of PKKK Miri, highlighted the need to raise public awareness regarding child safety and empowerment. He expressed hope that initiatives like this would help children recognize their rights and encourage them to seek assistance when necessary.
