World Bank approves $80 million for higher education
The World Bank’s Board of Executive Directors has approved $80 million to support Cambodia’s efforts to improve the quality of higher education, particularly in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
According to WB’s statement released on Monday, the six-year project, funded through the International Development Association (IDA), aims to enhance the skills and research capabilities of thousands of Cambodian students, contributing to the country’s long-term economic development.
The project will support nine public higher education institutions, benefiting approximately 32,000 students, including 13,000 women. The key components of the project include curriculum update, lecturer training, and the digitisation of education delivery. In addition, the project will focus on enhancing inclusive learning environment by improving access for female students and students with disabilities, while also offering support for female faculty members.
Tania Meyer, Cambodia Country Manager at World Bank, highlighted the significance of the project for the country’s human capital development. “Strengthening high-quality education and increasing the number of skilled graduates will aid Cambodia’s inclusive growth and development,” she said.
Meyer emphasised that these improvements will complement ongoing investments in health and basic education, laying the foundation for a productive workforce.
