MFU Collaborates with Colombian Experts for Sustainable Agrotourism through Arabica Coffee Exchange Activity

Mae Fah Luang University (MFU) recently hosted an Arabica coffee exchange activity in collaboration with the Thailand International Cooperation Agency (TICA) and the Presidential Agency for International Cooperation of Colombia (APC-Colombia). The event occurred from October 20 to 25, 2025, at MFU and various locations in Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai.

Focus of the Knowledge Exchange

The focus of the knowledge exchange was on integrating coffee and agritourism, forming part of a project titled “Training on the Sustainability of Arabica Coffee Production in Thailand.” This initiative is structured under the Thailand–Colombia Bilateral Technical Cooperation Plan for 2025–2027. It provided a venue for experts, entrepreneurs, and farmers from both Thailand and Colombia, a prominent coffee producer, to share insights and experiences related to sustainable Arabica coffee processing and development.

Welcoming Session

The welcoming session included MFU executives, such as Prof. Dr. Sujitra Wongkasemjit and Asst. Prof. Dr. Romyen Kosaikanont, who welcomed a delegation led by Mr. Andrés Leonardo Suárez Galvis from the Colombian Embassy. This delegation comprised researchers from Cenicafé, university lecturers, a Socio-Business Manager from Tecnicafé, and a coffee producer.

Project Activities

During the project, presentations on potential academic cooperation were delivered, alongside visits to advanced laboratories at the university and discussions with Thai coffee farmers from various local farms.

Opportunities for Sustainable Coffee Production

Dr. Amorn Owatworakit, Head of the Coffee Division at the Tea and Coffee Institute, highlighted that the project presented considerable opportunities for knowledge exchange and innovation in sustainable coffee production. The initiative aims to enhance Thailand’s coffee industry and promote sustainable agrotourism while underscoring MFU’s commitment to improving Thai coffee production quality to meet international standards. This collaboration reflects the partnership between Thailand and Colombia, with expected long-term benefits for farmers and local communities in both countries.
