Beijing Normal University and UNESCO Collaborate to Enhance Digital Education for Girls in Africa
Collaboration Announcement
On October 16, 2024, the UNESCO Prize for Girls’ and Women’s Education ceremony was held in Paris, France, where Yu Jihong, President of Beijing Normal University (BNU), announced a new collaborative initiative with UNESCO. The project is focused on improving digital education for girls in Africa, specifically targeting Ghana and Tanzania. It aims to bridge the digital divide by providing gender-transformative digital skills education for women and girls.
Project Objectives
The initiative will emphasize teacher development, engage in educational activities, and foster educational collaborations between China and Africa. During the announcement, Yu Jihong highlighted the project’s goals and objectives. In addition, Zhou Zuoyu, a representative from BNU, participated in a roundtable discussion that explored innovative strategies to enhance female participation in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields.
Implementation Strategy
Following the announcement, a project cooperation meeting took place on October 17, featuring discussions among UNESCO officials and representatives from the Ministries of Education of Ghana and Tanzania. The meeting focused on outlining the implementation strategy for the initiative.
Commitment to Global Education
This partnership underscores the ongoing commitment of BNU and UNESCO to promote global educational development. In recent years, both organizations have organized a series of international conferences and educational training programs that address key issues such as digital education, girls’ education, and teacher training, thereby strengthening their collaborative efforts.
