Speaking Up: The Journey from Silence to Strength

Annette Kavata, a second-year medical student at Aga Khan University, is using her voice to create safe spaces for young people to discuss emotional wellbeing, relationships, and gender equality. At just 19, she founded Girl Up AKU, a student-led initiative launched in November 2024 as part of the global Girl Up movement.

Inspired by her advocacy work with non-governmental organizations since the age of 16, Annette witnessed firsthand the challenges many teenagers faced, including unplanned pregnancies, emotional struggles, and unhealthy relationships. Determined to make a difference, she created a platform where students could speak openly without fear of judgement.

One of the initiative’s key projects is a student-led podcast featuring honest conversations about topics often considered difficult or taboo. Supported by Aga Khan University, the team uses university studios in Nairobi to produce episodes that amplify real student experiences.

Beyond campus, Girl Up AKU also conducts outreach sessions in schools across Meru County, encouraging young people to discuss emotional health and personal growth openly.

Through advocacy, dialogue, and collaboration, Annette and her team are helping students feel heard, supported, and empowered to seek guidance when needed.
