University of Luzon Librarians Enhance Research Skills and Open Access Advocacy

The University of Luzon is represented by Dr. Lorena U. Ontangco, Chief Librarian, and Ms. Sarah Jean F. Purilan at a two-day seminar-workshop aimed at enhancing the role of library professionals within the digital academic landscape. The event, titled “Empowering Librarians as Research Innovators: Qualitative Inquiry and Open Access OER Platforms,” takes place at Mariano Marcos State University in Batac, Ilocos Norte, on October 2 and 3, 2025. This initiative underscores the university’s intent to advance skills in information management.

Transforming Library Professionals

The seminar is designed to facilitate the transformation of library professionals from traditional custodians of knowledge into active innovators in research. It includes sessions focused on qualitative inquiry methodologies, which are vital for deepening the understanding of academic scholarship. Through the enhancement of research capabilities among its library staff, the University of Luzon seeks to encourage collaborative relationships with faculty and students across various disciplines, thereby supporting institutional innovation and reinforcing the library’s role within the academic community.

Open Access and Open Educational Resources

A key aspect of the workshop is the promotion of Open Access and the utilization of Open Educational Resources (OER). This emphasis is particularly pertinent in the current educational environment, as it aims to ensure equitable access to knowledge by minimizing financial barriers and increasing the availability of resources. The seminar acknowledges the essential advocacy role of librarians, emphasizing the need for students and faculty to have free access to quality educational materials.

Commitment to Professional Development

Participation in this workshop exemplifies the University of Luzon’s commitment to professional development and institutional excellence. By prioritizing research skills and the application of open resources, the institution aims to strengthen its academic services and prepare its library system to meet the evolving demands of research in a digital context, ultimately supporting quality education for its community.

Alignment with Global Development Frameworks

These initiatives align with significant global development frameworks, notably the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). By enhancing staff expertise in qualitative research and resource management, the University contributes to SDG 4: Quality Education, which emphasizes inclusive and equitable learning opportunities. Furthermore, its advocacy for Open Access and Open Educational Resources supports SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals, promoting global knowledge sharing and fostering sustainable development.
