UNAIR Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences’ International Student Program
Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) has launched the Airlangga Global Program in collaboration with the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences (FPK). This initiative recently welcomed students from Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) for an intensive hands-on fisheries study that took place from December 2 to December 7, 2024.
During the program, UMT students attended lectures and engaged in practical workshops. Activities included creating aquascapes and preparing wontons using fish-based products. Additionally, students visited seaweed farms, freshwater fish cultivation sites, and participated in a cultural tour of Batu City.
The program’s goals include familiarizing international students with FPK, enhancing UNAIR’s global presence, and encouraging global interest in the institution’s academic offerings. Furthermore, the program aims to promote advancements in Indonesia’s fisheries sector through international collaboration.
Participant Feedback
Khairul Azri Azhari, a participant from UMT, reported a positive experience regarding UNAIR’s facilities and academic framework. He noted the distinct advantage of having a dedicated faculty for fisheries studies at UNAIR, in contrast to his experiences at UMT, where exposure to fisheries studies is limited.
Azhari commented, “I was surprised to learn that UNAIR has a faculty dedicated to fisheries and marine sciences. At UMT, we have a similar faculty, but as a non-fisheries student, this program has given me a deeper understanding of fisheries.”
Insights into Seaweed Cultivation
Azhari pointed out that a visit to the Rejeki Bintang Samudera seaweed farm in Sidoarjo provided particularly valuable insights. He learned about the various uses of seaweed across different industries, including culinary and cosmetic applications.
He stated, “We explored different types of seaweed and its applications in culinary and cosmetic fields. We also visited aquaculture sites for catfish and tilapia and learned about fish feed production, which is a vital component of sustainable fish farming.”
Personal and Professional Development
Azhari remarked on the personal growth opportunities provided by the program. He emphasized the significance of stepping outside one’s comfort zone and the program’s capacity to broaden perspectives.
He concluded, “Programs like the AGP offer an excellent opportunity to explore new fields and gain knowledge. It’s a stepping stone for personal and professional growth.”
