EU-Supported MASUDEM Project Enhances Sustainability-Driven Business Education at FEB UGM

The Faculty of Economics and Business at Universitas Gadjah Mada (FEB UGM) recently participated in the Master Studies in Sustainable Development and Management (MASUDEM) Final Conference, which took place from November 13 to 14, 2025, at ICO NIDA in Bangkok. The FEB UGM delegation included Professor Nurul Indarti, a member of the MASUDEM Steering Committee, alongside lecturers Dr. Sari Sitalaksmi and Dr. Rocky Adiguna.

Conference Overview

The conference, themed “Advancing Sustainability through Social Science, Management, and Innovation,” provided a platform for FEB UGM to announce the introduction of a new Sustainability Management concentration in its Master of Business Administration (MBA) program, representing the seventh concentration within the program. This initiative is aimed at incorporating sustainability education into the core aspects of the MBA curriculum.

Presentation Highlights

In her presentation titled “Mainstreaming Sustainability Management: The Integration of MASUDEM in the MBA FEB UGM Curriculum,” Professor Indarti discussed how the new concentration is part of a long-term collaboration among member universities within the MASUDEM consortium. This consortium has received support from the European Union for a higher education capacity-building program since 2022.

Sustainability Management Concentration

The newly established Sustainability Management concentration includes specialized courses such as ESG Investment and Reporting, Environmental Impact Assessment, Sustainability Leadership, and Technology and Innovation Management for Sustainability. This development marks a significant shift at FEB UGM, where sustainability is now viewed as an integral component of the primary curriculum rather than a supplementary topic.

Young Researchers’ Contributions

Additionally, FEB UGM contributed to the conference by sending three young researchers to present their findings on sustainability. Ferly Arvidia Anindita focused on “Determinants of Sustainable Food Waste Management Behaviour: Study on Yogyakarta Province,” Wildan Wardana examined “Underlying Factors of Green Innovation Among Fashion Businesses in Indonesia,” and Sony Wijaya presented research titled “Lessons Learned from the Failures Experienced by Alumni of the Japanese Internship Program.”

Steering Committee Meeting

Prior to the conference, the MASUDEM Steering Committee convened on November 10, 2025, to evaluate potential new master’s programs and sustainability-related concentrations across six universities in the MASUDEM consortium, which includes UGM, Universitas Islam Indonesia (UII), Universitas Trisakti, and three Thai institutions: the National Institute of Development Administration (NIDA), Srinakharinwirot University, and Naresuan University.

Commitment to Sustainability Education

The involvement of FEB UGM in the MASUDEM Final Conference underscores the institution’s commitment to enhancing education and research in sustainability. Through partnerships with international consortia such as MASUDEM, FEB UGM seeks to cultivate knowledge, curricula, and learning practices that address global sustainability management needs.
