National Science Week 2025 at Mae Fah Luang University: Inspiring Youth for Innovation and Sustainability

Mae Fah Luang University (MFU) conducted the National Science Week 2025 from August 18 to 20, focusing on the theme “Science in Action for Sustainable Community.” The event aimed to enhance scientific and technological knowledge among youth, students, and the general public, while emphasizing the integration of science into sustainable community development.

Opening Ceremony

The opening ceremony included a tribute to King Mongkut (Rama IV), recognized as the “Father of Science in Thailand.” Prof. Dr. Sujitra Wongkasemjit presided over the event, which was attended by university executives, faculty, students, and representatives from various organizations. The ceremony acknowledged King Mongkut’s contributions and officially inaugurated Science Week.

Competitions and Activities

Throughout the three-day event, a variety of competitions were held to foster the scientific and technological abilities of young participants. Notable contests included those for science speeches, science-imagination artworks, creative inventions, a Smart & Sustainable Packaging Design Contest, and a healthy northern Thai food competition aimed at students and the public. Additionally, a teaching media design competition for educators was part of the program.

A recycled fashion and invention contest was also featured, designed to raise environmental awareness and encourage innovation. This competition allowed participants to present creative projects that integrated artistic expression with practical uses, such as clothing made from plastic bottles and aluminum cans.

Engagement and Education

National Science Week offered exhibitions and hands-on science activities to further engage and motivate attendees. Displays honoring the “Father of Science in Thailand” and the “Father of Technology” complemented interactive experiments, including brewing Chinese herbal tea, hygiene demonstrations, and activities involving wind-powered cars and giant bubbles. These sessions attracted considerable interest from students and visitors, providing valuable educational experiences.

Sustainable Development Goals

The event highlighted themes of creativity, public responsibility, and environmental stewardship, aligning with several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), and SDG 13 (Climate Action).

Participation and Impact

National Science Week 2025 saw participation from over 15,000 individuals representing 146 schools in Chiang Rai and surrounding areas, reinforcing MFU’s role as a regional hub for science, technology, and innovation, while equipping Thai youth with essential skills and creativity for a sustainable future.
