Honorary Doctorate Dedicated by Chief Adviser to Bangladesh’s People – Berita UKM

Kuala Lumpur, 13 August 2025 – Prof. Dr. Muhammad Yunus, serving as the Chief Adviser to the Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, dedicated the Honorary Doctorate awarded by Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) to the people of Bangladesh.
Recognition of Commitment to Youth
During his address, Prof. Dr. Yunus highlighted the recognition as a testament to his continuous commitment to the aspirations of the nation’s youth. He reflected on the youth-led protest that occurred in July and August 2024, which he believed infused new significance into Bangladesh’s national identity and instilled renewed hope for the future. Many young individuals exhibited notable bravery in their resistance against oppressive governance.
Strength from Sacrifice
Prof. Dr. Yunus remarked, “Their supreme sacrifice is my strength. I remain committed to building a country where no one suffers from poverty, hunger, or unemployment. A country that offers equal rights and opportunities for all.”
Poverty as a Systemic Issue
He further articulated that poverty should not be viewed as an indication of a lack of talent or dreams, but as a byproduct of a systemic failure to provide equitable opportunities. He criticized the financial system for disproportionately benefiting the wealthy, which prompted his initiative to establish a framework enabling the poorest individuals to access small loans, initiate businesses, and improve their living conditions.
The Evolution of Microfinance
Beginning as a modest effort to lend to women in a village in Bangladesh, this initiative has evolved into a global movement that has empowered millions to escape the cycle of poverty. “Microfinance has demonstrated that poverty is not an insurmountable condition—it can be addressed,” he stated. He encouraged young people to concentrate on creating opportunities that would benefit both themselves and their communities, rather than exclusively seeking traditional employment.
A Vision for a Better Future
Prof. Dr. Yunus conveyed a vision that includes three objectives: Zero Poverty, Zero Unemployment, and Zero Net Carbon Emissions, reinforcing his belief in the possibility of a world free from poverty where meaningful work is available to all. He warned that the current global system is inadequate in addressing pressing issues such as climate change, inequality, and economic instability, suggesting that if the prevailing system is not challenged, these problems will likely endure.
Advocating for a New Approach
He advocated for a new approach that prioritizes social business, sustainability, and a focus on people rather than profit, criticizing the belief that economic growth alone can resolve all issues, particularly when it only benefits a select few.
Call for Inclusive Economy
Additionally, he expressed concern regarding the increasing concentration of wealth among a small elite and its contribution to sustaining inequality and injustice. He called for an inclusive economy that promotes equitable wealth distribution, enabling every individual to live with dignity and purpose.
Strengthening Bangladesh-Malaysia Ties
Prof. Dr. Yunus emphasized the strong friendship between Bangladesh and Malaysia, founded on mutual respect, cultural exchanges, and common developmental goals. He expressed hope for strengthened cooperation in emerging sectors such as semiconductor technology, the halal economy, renewable energy, and entrepreneurship. In conclusion, he asserted that enhanced collaboration in education, research, and trade could position both Bangladesh and Malaysia as exemplars of sustainable development and social progress.
