Curtin Malaysia Hosts Mini-Trading Workshop for Secondary School Students

On July 29, 2025, Curtin University Malaysia conducted a Mini-Trading Workshop designed to provide over 50 secondary school students from various institutions in Miri with practical insights into global finance. This event was part of the university’s STEM 2025 outreach initiatives.

Workshop Details

The workshop was held in the Curtin Trading Room, which features advanced financial simulation technology, including real-time market data and trading software. Participating schools included SMK Pujut, SMK Baru, SMK Merbau, SMK Chung Hua (CF) Miri, and Kolej Vokasional Miri. The program utilized interactive learning and virtual simulations of trading scenarios to engage the students.

Leadership and Instruction

The workshop was led by Dr. Alpha Anak Ngadan, a Lecturer in Accounting and Finance at Curtin Malaysia’s Faculty of Business. Dr. Ngadan highlighted the significance of financial literacy and covered essential trading principles such as profit creation, risk management, and capital preservation. He was supported by colleagues Dr. Mohammad Belayet Hossain, Dr. Hosam Alden Riyadh, Dr. Mohammad Abdul Matin, and Dr. Tanusree Chakravarty.

Virtual Trading Competition

A key feature of the workshop was a virtual trading competition in which each student was provided with a simulated capital of USD 100,000 to practice their skills in live market conditions. The competition, which took place from 9:45 AM to 11:30 AM, required participants to make quick decisions and perform analyses. At the event’s conclusion, Kolej Vokasional Miri was recognized as the top performer, followed by SMK Merbau and SMK Baru.

Objectives and Outcomes

Dr. Ngadan remarked on the objective of the workshop, stating it aimed not only to impart trading skills but also to promote financial literacy and inspire potential careers in finance and STEM fields. The intent was to equip students with the necessary knowledge, confidence, and curiosity for future endeavors.
