USU’s Independent Admission Selection 2025: Allocation of 2,652 New Student Seats

Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) recently conducted a visit for the 2025 Independent Student Selection (SMM), aimed at promoting integrity and transparency in the new student admission process. The event took place at the Information Systems Center (PSI) on June 10, 2025, and was attended by university leadership and the SMM implementation team.
Selection Overview
USU’s Vice Rector I, Prof. Dr. Edy Ikhsan, S.H., M.A., reported that this year’s selection attracted 5,454 participants vying for 2,652 available seats. Prof. Ikhsan noted that this substantial number is indicative of rising public confidence in USU’s educational standards.
Competition and Commitment
He remarked that the competition level this year remained consistent with previous years, reflecting sustained interest in USU as a higher education option. The vice rector underscored the university’s commitment to overseeing the admission process, which aims to minimize the issue of vacant seats that has been a challenge in earlier admissions.
Strategic Phase of Selection
Ir. Ikhsan Siregar, S.T., M.Eng., Ph.D., the Executive Secretary of SMM 2025, described the second phase of the selection as part of USU’s strategy to optimize enrollment capacity without sacrificing quality. This phase will focus on filling any unallocated spots from the initial selection.
Addressing Enrollment Capacity
This approach seeks to prevent empty seats while demonstrating effective management of enrollment capacity. Additionally, Dr. Joiverdia Arifiyanto, S.H., M.H., Vice Executive Secretary of SMM USU 2025, mentioned that data collection on participants from outside Medan City is ongoing, but assured that access to the selection remains available to prospective students from across Indonesia.
Response to Vacancy
The second phase of the SMM is being implemented in response to approximately 450 vacant seats identified in the previous admission cycle. It is scheduled to commence following the completion of selections and re-registrations from other pathways such as SNBT and SMM Barat.
Future Expectations
This initiative is expected to attract additional candidates while addressing classroom capacity and optimizing teaching resources. It aligns with USU’s mission to be an inclusive and adaptable educational institution, responding to the changing dynamics of national higher education.
Continuous Improvement
USU continues to focus on enhancing the quality of new student admissions through established technical and managerial processes. The ongoing selection system aims to identify the most suitable candidates, reflecting the institution’s integrity in cultivating a distinguished academic cohort.
