USM 45th Kung Fu Night: Celebrating Cultural Heritage Through Stunning Martial Arts Performances

The Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) Kung Fu Club recently hosted its 45th annual Kung Fu Night, an event designed to showcase martial arts and promote cultural traditions. The event took place on May 10 at the Dewan Tuanku Syed Putra (DTSP), attracting students, alumni, and martial arts enthusiasts.
Event Officiation
Dr. Lim Chee Ann, who represented the Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Student Development Affairs and Alumni, officiated the event. In his address, he recognized the USM Kung Fu Club for its dedication to martial arts education and community engagement. He underscored the importance of the Kung Fu Night, which features a variety of Chinese martial arts styles, including Shaolin, Tai Chi, Wushu, and Qi Gong, along with demonstrations of traditional weapons.

Dr. Lim highlighted the event’s longstanding significance within the university, stating that it has fostered discipline, teamwork, and cultural exchange for nearly five decades. He also noted the role of martial arts in promoting discipline and cultural appreciation among students.

Notable guests at the event included YB Wong Hon Wai, Penang’s State EXCO for Tourism and Creative Economy, and Khor Hun Chong, who represented the Chairman of the Penang Federation of Wushu, Lion, and Dragon Dance Associations. Wong, an alumnus of USM, conveyed his pride in the university’s commitment to preserving cultural heritage.

Project Director Tan Xin Hui acknowledged the support of grandmasters and coaches who have contributed to the Kung Fu Club over the years. She expressed hopes that the event would continue to inspire students to engage with and promote martial arts.
