Singapore Invests S$130 Million in Revolutionary RNA Research Initiative

Singapore has initiated a significant investment in RNA research with the launch of the National Initiative for RNA Biology and Its Applications (NIRBA), which has been allocated S$130 million over seven years. The announcement was made by Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat, who also serves as Chairman of the National Research Foundation (NRF).

Collaboration Among Leading Institutions

The program aims to foster collaboration among scientists and clinicians from leading institutions, including the National University of Singapore (NUS), Nanyang Technological University (NTU), the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR), and Duke-NUS Medical School. By consolidating expertise, NIRBA seeks to enhance strategic research capabilities in the rapidly evolving field of RNA biology.

Importance of RNA Biology

RNA biology is increasingly recognized for its importance in addressing future health and economic challenges in Singapore. RNA molecules, which are transcribed from DNA, play a critical role in translating genetic information into proteins necessary for various biological functions. Recent research indicates that these RNA molecules contribute to a range of biological activities, with many of their functions in health and disease still being explored.

Objectives of NIRBA

The objectives of NIRBA include establishing world-class research facilities focused on RNA, creating innovation clusters to facilitate dynamic research collaborations, and developing strategies to leverage the health and economic advantages of RNA research for Singapore and the broader community. These innovation clusters are intended to promote interdisciplinary approaches among researchers, which could significantly strengthen Singapore’s capabilities in RNA research.
