Jesselton University College and Woosuk University Sign MOU to Strengthen Teacher Training and Research Collaboration

3 February 2025 – Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia – Jesselton University College (JUC) and Woosuk University (South Korea) have entered into a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to enhance academic cooperation, teacher training, and research collaboration between the two institutions. This agreement aims to foster stronger educational ties, faculty development, and knowledge-sharing between Malaysia and South Korea. This collaboration aligns with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 17: Partnerships for the Goals, reinforcing the importance of global academic cooperation in teacher training, research, and faculty development.

The MOU establishes a framework for both universities to collaborate in key areas, contributing to SDG 17 through international partnerships and knowledge-sharing initiatives:

  • Teacher Training & Professional Development – Developing faculty training programs in face-to-face, blended, and online modes.
  • Collaborative Educational Projects – Joint initiatives focusing on teacher training methodologies and professional development.
  • Student & Research Exchange – Facilitating opportunities for student mobility, academic research, and faculty exchange.
  • Exchange of Publications & Knowledge Resources – Strengthening academic discourse through shared research materials and publications, fostering cross-border collaboration in sustainable education and professional development (SDG 17).

Speaking on the significance of this collaboration, Prof. Datuk Dr. Fred Y F Chin, President of Jesselton University College, stated, “This partnership with Woosuk University aligns with our commitment to advancing academic excellence and faculty development. By fostering international cooperation in teacher training and research, we are creating new opportunities for educational innovation. Through this initiative, JUC and Woosuk University are actively supporting SDG 17 by building strong academic networks that enhance global faculty expertise, bridge research collaborations, and improve educational accessibility.”

The agreement was signed with a shared vision to promote global educational collaboration while respecting academic integrity and confidentiality. The MOU outlines a five-year cooperation framework, with the potential for extension through mutual agreement.

Moving forward, both institutions will actively explore ways to implement joint initiatives that contribute to higher education development and professional training. This partnership serves as a model for global academic collaboration under SDG 17, ensuring sustainable and impactful educational advancements through long-term international cooperation.
