FIKKIA Medical Program Launches Innovative Travel Medicine Curriculum at Universitas Airlangga

The Faculty of Health, Medicine, and Natural Sciences (FIKKIA) at Universitas Airlangga has initiated the registration process for its Bachelor of Medicine program, part of the 2025 National Selection Based on Test (SNBT). The program aims to enroll a minimum of 15 students, focusing on high school graduates interested in pursuing medical studies at the Banyuwangi campus.
Travel Medicine Curriculum
A distinctive aspect of the FIKKIA curriculum is its Travel Medicine block, designed to integrate academic study with practical experiences related to travel and tourism. The geographical characteristics and robust tourism industry of Banyuwangi create an environment conducive to this specialized education.
Dr. Muhammad Nazmuddin, Head of the FIKKIA Medicine Program, emphasized the significance of the Travel Medicine curriculum. The program is intended to equip students to address health challenges faced in the tourism sector, with a particular emphasis on preventive care and risk assessment tailored for various destinations.
The Travel Medicine component is set to begin in the spring semester of the 2024/2025 academic year. Coordination meetings are taking place with the Banyuwangi Regency Tourism Office to discuss suitable locations for practical training and to synchronize the program’s schedule with the local tourism calendar. Among the potential training sites are prominent areas such as Kawah Ijen and Tamansari, though adjustments may be made based on educational needs.
Educational Commitment
The FIKKIA program aims to improve healthcare services for both visitors and the local community in Banyuwangi. Dr. Nazmuddin remarked on the program’s dedication to delivering high-quality medical education and forming partnerships with institutions at national and international levels, which will enhance the standard of education in the Travel Medicine domain.
The ongoing development of the curriculum underscores a commitment to broadening students’ knowledge and practical experience in travel medicine. Various initiatives are planned to ensure a comprehensive understanding of the field, which is vital for enhancing healthcare support in tourism-centric areas.
This initiative is part of Universitas Airlangga’s broader objective to provide relevant and comprehensive medical education that aligns with the evolving demands of both local and global contexts.
