Chula Hosts 2nd Asia Forward Series: Exploring Thailand’s Approach to New Security Dynamics

Chulalongkorn University’s Institute of Asian Studies, in collaboration with the Program Management Unit on Area-Based Development (PMU-A), hosted the 2nd Asia Forward Series on March 11, 2025. The event took place at the Music Hall in the Art and Culture Building and included a lecture titled “From Corridors to Connectivity: Thailand’s Approach to New Security Dynamics,” presented by General Songwit Noonpackdee, Chief of Defense Forces. Opening remarks were delivered by Professor Dr. Surakiart Sathirathai, Chairman of the Chulalongkorn University Council.

Platform for Knowledge Exchange

In his address, Professor Dr. Surakiart stressed the Asia Forward Series’ role as a platform for knowledge exchange regarding regional growth in the face of global uncertainties. He pointed out the need for collaboration among academia, government sectors, and civil society to tackle emerging challenges and promote inclusive development.

Collaborative Security Efforts

General Songwit discussed the importance of collaborative security efforts against the backdrop of shifting global power dynamics, digital security threats, and the impacts of climate change. He introduced the concept of the “Interior Line of Connectivity,” which positions Thailand as a pivotal hub for regional security initiatives.

Panel Discussion on Human Security

The event also featured a panel discussion on “Human Security: The Role of Public Participation in National and Community Resilience.” Panelists addressed various topics, including the influence of global changes on human capital development, opportunities for civic engagement, and the significance of community involvement in policymaking.

Aims of the Asia Forward Series

Launched in January 2025, the Asia Forward Series aims to facilitate public dialogue and share insights on the future of Asia while reinforcing Chulalongkorn University’s position as a knowledge hub. Upcoming sessions are expected to focus on critical regional and global themes, emphasizing policy development and enhancing collaboration for sustainable progress in Asia.
