UTM Hosts Inaugural MAIC Meeting to Strengthen National AI Strategic Framework
On December 20, 2024, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) convened the inaugural meeting of the Protem Committee for the Malaysian Artificial Intelligence Consortium (MAIC). This event gathered over 30 representatives from various institutions, government agencies, and industries across Malaysia, with the objective of formulating strategies to enhance the development of artificial intelligence (AI) technology and talent in the country.
Meeting Highlights
During the meeting, the Acting Vice-Chancellor of UTM, Professor Dr. Mohd Shafry Mohd Rahim, highlighted the Malaysian Ministry of Higher Education’s perspective on refining the MAIC structure to align with the goals of the Malaysia Artificial Intelligence Nexus (MY NEXUS).
Curriculum Development
The agenda included discussions on developing academic programs and curricula that address industry requirements, thereby providing a foundation for nurturing local talent in AI. The MAIC is expected to advocate for the establishment of curriculum standards, creation of specialized AI faculties, and implementation of guidelines for academic and professional programs designed to advance AI talent.
Community Engagement
Moreover, the necessity of offering professional AI courses to community members, government entities, industries, and local leaders was emphasized, aiming to increase grassroots awareness and understanding of AI. The MAIC plans to develop comprehensive training modules in partnership with various government agencies.
Collaborative Efforts
Collaborative efforts with entities like the Malaysian Research Accelerator for Technology & Innovation (MRANTI) were also discussed. These collaborations will aim to assist students and entrepreneurs in bringing innovative AI products to market and generating opportunities in the startup ecosystem.
Government Utilization of AI
Government agencies are encouraged to leverage AI and big data tools for effective data management, analysis, and service enhancement. Additionally, the MAIC will support the government in developing policies, governance frameworks, and ethical standards associated with AI usage to ensure that technology is applied responsibly and to the nation’s advantage.

Professor Dr. Mohd Shafry remarked on the importance of recognizing AI’s potential in not only technological advancements but also in influencing policymaking and legislation related to AI, paving the way for its responsible and beneficial application within Malaysia.
