British Council Collaborates with Maharashtra to Enhance International Education
The government of Maharashtra has entered into a partnership with the British Council to launch an initiative focused on promoting internationalisation in the region. This initiative includes a capacity-building program tailored for international officers, aimed at enhancing the internationalisation efforts within higher education institutions in Maharashtra.
Memorandum of Understanding
The program was established through a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the British Council and the Department of Higher and Technical Education of Maharashtra. Its objective is to equip participants with essential skills, tools, and knowledge that are critical for fostering global academic collaborations.
Workshop Participation
A group comprising 36 individuals from 18 public and private universities in Maharashtra has been selected to participate in the workshop. This initiative aligns with India’s National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which seeks to position the country as a global education hub by promoting cross-border partnerships and enhancing institutional excellence.
Curriculum Focus
The curriculum of the workshop is designed to emphasize skill development, practical strategies, and knowledge sharing. It is intended to empower international officers to effectively advance their institutions’ global engagement initiatives. The overarching aim of these sessions is to achieve meaningful outcomes that align with the internationalisation objectives established by the participating universities.
Program Importance
Rashi Jain, Director of West India at the British Council, highlighted the program’s importance in strengthening global partnerships for Indian universities. Shri Vikas Chandra Rastogi, Principal Secretary for Higher and Technical Education in Maharashtra, indicated that this initiative represents a significant step towards modernising Indian higher education and fostering international connections.
Collaborative Initiatives
In recent years, the British Council has initiated various collaborative programs with state governments throughout India. Notably, it has signed four MOUs with the Karnataka government to enhance opportunities for underprivileged students to study in the UK and has partnered with the Tamil Nadu government to promote cultural initiatives and support young artists and entrepreneurs.
